From Static to Real-Time KPIs

Operators and managers appreciate the usefulness of real-time measurements for critical machines. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are measurable values that enable an organization to assess the degree to which operational and financial objectives are met and thus further the business future for its stakeholders.

KPIs are adaptable to the different services that make up a company, including manufacturing units and critical machines. With a smart Manufacturing Execution System (MES), such as our own FACTO for Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAM), it is possible to make your own wisely selected KPIs dynamic and in real-time. Not only can you read your KPIs updated to standing current values, but you can examine critical pieces of information if need be and you can even act directly on equipment immediately.

Manufacturing processes require constant monitoring of their measurable production performance in order to be able to intervene as quickly as possible. A single component that is at fault in your plant as to its characteristics or the quality of its performance may permanently compromise the product. FACTO makes your KPIs dynamic and real-time ratios to monitor your manufacturing processes.

Also, KPIs and real-time are an opportunity to get to know your equipment better. The programming of relevant reports that take into account both the performance history of your equipment and the latest data produced and collected allows the development of prospective actions such as predictive maintenance to name the best-known practice, but also allows plan input management and future needs to optimize plant output and shipments. It is even possible to consider prescriptive actions!

KPIs are a tool box helping you to go beyond qualitative & quantitative determination of discrete or continuous measurable variables. Wisely selected KPIs with FACTO’s real real-time is that enlightening, useful and effective!

What is the best KPI for you?

It would be so nice to find the magic number that would account for everything instantly. What’s best to measure?

Several perspectives intersect in this respect.

Measure everything. Clever? Not really. There is no merit to measure everything. The possibilities are so great even if we think that we will find something in retrospect.

Of course, those who are already immersed in the practice of daily monitoring with KPIs know that it is important to understand and set the relevant data collection. This is where know-how and knowledge is.

Hereunder are some KPIs whose usefulness is confirmed in manufacturing facilities. Some KPIs favor production analysis as it is unfolding in manufacturing facilities and allow intervention on equipment accordingly. Other KPIs are more synthetic and shed light on strategic choices. Get in touch with our team to discuss your choices and make them happen!

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) measures useful manufacturing time against equipment availability and quality. OEE can be measured for an entire installation, a cell, a product or even a part.

Capacity Utilisation Rate (CUR) has a standard engineering definition of weighted average ratios between actual output to the maximum that could be produced per unit of time with existing plant and equipment.

Delivery in full, on time (DIFOT) is a measurement of logistics or delivery performance within a supply chain. It tells you if the supply chain was able or is able to deliver.

From the customer standpoint, Order Fulfilment Cycle Time is a continuous measurement defined as the amount of time from customer authorization of a sales order to the customer receipt of product.

Rework Level measures the number or percentage of items that require rework and is an indicator of internal operational efficiency.

Initially, all those KPIs were measured and used in a static reporting environment. Reports were daily at best, action obsolete or lost in paperwork at times. With FACTO’s real-time and smart reporting, KPIs reach an entirely new level of relevance with next to no delay in responding and delivering new sets of instructions to machines and work-teams.

Some KPIs are more complex and can lead teams to wonder how real-time and smart reporting can be effective. For instance, active and passive Process Waste Level (PWL) which aims at visualizing the nature and scope of a wide variety of waste, often concealed or abstract. Precisely, real-time and smart reporting can help reveal waste that used to go by unnoticed! Take time to discuss your ideas with our team. FACTO and a few sensors might be all you need to keep the edge! We can help you with both!

Finally but not least as the saying goes, real-time keeps yielding spectacular results within Six Sigma Levels. Related KPIs such as standard deviation use for certification of products and the resulting Six Sigma Levels are worth many posts, blogs and books. For now, let us just say we are always stunned by the ever renewed effectiveness of standard deviation use to acknowledge quality certification.

Our team is composed from top to bottom and across the floor experienced manufacturing experts and personnel. FACTO is made right from factory floor experience. Get in touch with us and benefit from our own professional and technological edge.
